Having made your way to Denpasar, you will be met by a representative of Aurora Expeditions and transferred to our group hotel. Upon arrival at your included hotel, please visit the welcome desk where you can collect your luggage cabin tags and speak with our ground operations team, who may have information to share with you about pre-embarkation or to provide you with information about where to dine, withdraw cash or purchase last minute items from a local pharmacy or supermarket.  

The remainder of your time is at leisure. All meals today are at your own expense.

This morning, please ensure your cabin luggage is fitted with cabin tags clearly labelled with your name and cabin number. Any valuables or personal items should be kept on you throughout the day. Enjoy a morning and lunch at leisure before boarding a charter flight to Sorong, where our vessel the Greg Mortimer awaits.  

The charter flight is scheduled to depart at 14:00 for Sorong and arrive at 18:20. There will be food included on the flight. 

Transfer to the port for embarkation. You will have time to settle into your cabin before our important briefings begin. Enjoy the thrill of departure as we 'throw the lines' and set sail for Cenderawasih Bay. Meet your Expedition Team and crew at the Captain's Welcome Dinner. 

Part of the secluded Su Islands, Amsterdam Island offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in local culture. Discover this little-known gem as we explore its pristine environment. Friendly locals will welcome us to the village beach, providing an authentic glimpse into island life.

Choose to snorkel above the historic World War II shipwrecks surrounding Amsterdam and Middleburg Islands, where colourful coral growth and tropical marine life create a unique underwater experience.

Morning Experience: Expressions of Interest – Guided Nature Walk 

For those interested in wildlife and nature, a guided walk through the coastal tropical rainforest offers the chance to observe a variety of birdlife, including Sulphur-crested Cockatoos, Blyth’s Hornbills, drongos, monarchs, pigeons and honeyeaters. The area is also home to vibrant butterflies, such as Ornithoptera priamus, and the striking Eupholus beetle. Depending on conditions and timing, the walk may also include a search for Leatherback turtle nesting sites, a visit to the ruins of a historic church, and the Pilgrim site, marked by a cross overlooking the island’s edge.

Cenderawasih Bay, or Bird of Paradise Bay, is a marine wonderland teeming with life. As Indonesia’s largest marine park, Teluk Cenderawasih National Park safeguards over 14,500 square kilometres of pristine ocean, nurturing a vibrant ecosystem that includes whale sharks, dugongs, dolphins, and a dazzling array of fish and coral species.  

Lying within Cenderawasih Bay, the Auri Islands are home to some of the most pristine coral reefs in Indonesia and an ideal place to start your water activities in West Papua. Enjoy some beachcombing, swimming, snorkelling and diving in the clear, warm tropical waters.

This afternoon, the ship repositions to Roon Island for a visit to Yende Village. Upon arrival, guests will receive a warm traditional welcome from the local community, featuring cultural performances and music. Choose to explore the village at your own pace, or join a guided walk to gain an insight into daily life, local customs, and the rich history of the region. Along the way, there are opportunities to visit significant community landmarks, enjoy coastal views, meet local residents, and browse handcrafted souvenirs, while learning about the village’s enduring connection to both its cultural heritage and the surrounding marine environment. Relax beneath the shade of coconut palms and tropical trees while enjoying the village atmosphere. 

Afternoon experience: Expressions of Interest – Snorkel Roon Island 

Discover the pristine waters of Roon Island, where vibrant coral reefs and abundant marine life make for unforgettable snorkelling. The may be the chance to explore the famous WWII Japanese Zero wreck in shallow water, and keep an eye out for turtles, colourful reef fish and other marine treasures along the way.

Guests who do not wish to snorkel can still enjoy views of the Whale Sharks from the Zodiac.  

These gentle giants, the largest fish in the world, congregate in Cenderawasih Bay Marine Park due to the abundant food supply provided by local fishing activities. Snorkelling alongside these peaceful creatures is an experience that will leave you awe-inspired. As you glide through the water, you’ll be captivated by their immense size and graceful movements.

Morning Experience: Expressions of Interest - Cenderawasih Bay Whale Shark Encounter – Snorkelling 

Guests wishing to register their interest in swimming alongside whale sharks are invited to select this optional experience. Starting from approximately 5am, guests will receive a briefing before disembarking in small groups and transferring to the appointed locations. Set within the pristine waters of Cenderawasih Bay Marine Park, one of Southeast Asia’s largest marine protected areas, this unforgettable encounter offers the opportunity to observe these gentle giants in their natural habitat near traditional fishing platforms known as Bagans. Along the way, guests may also spot sea turtles, manta rays, dolphins, reef sharks, and an abundance of tropical marine life. 

Duration: Total tour time – 3 hours. Time in water – approximately 10-15 minutes.

Important information: This activity is recommended for guests with good swimming skills and comfortable swimming in very deep water. Its is not suitable for guests with back, neck, heart, or respiratory problems, guests prone to seasickness, guests with limited mobility, or wheelchair users. We will have equipment available for all our guests, though you are welcome to bring your own equipment if you wish (full-face masks are prohibited). As the sun can be strong in these areas, we recommend the use of eco-friendly sunscreen and a rash guard to protect as much skin as possible. Please remember to observe wildlife from a respectful distance and avoid touching the animals to protect their natural behaviour during your snorkelling. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Guests wishing to register their interest in the Whale Shark Observations are invited to select this optional excursion. Starting from approximately 5am, guests will receive a briefing before disembarking in small groups and transferring to the appointed locations.. 

Guests who prefer to remain aboard the Zodiac may enjoy excellent viewing and photographic opportunities while learning about whale shark ecology, conservation initiatives, and the unique relationship between these animals and the local fishing communities.

Located in the ‘Coral Triangle,’ Raja Ampat archipelago has been described as a marine ‘species factory,’ and a Mission Blue Hope Spot. Believed to contain the most biodiverse marine habitat on the planet, the waters surrounding Raja Ampat are home to 600 species of hard coral and 1,500 types of fish – more than anywhere else in the world – which makes for exceptional diving and snorkelling experience. We plan to spend two days exploring the coral reefs and shoals, limestone formations and rainforests of this hidden gem.  

North of Waigeo, Ayau Atoll is a stunning mosaic of coral islands, sandbars, and turquoise lagoons, where thriving reefs meet the deep blue ocean and manta rays are often seen gliding below. At its heart lies Kanobe Island, a secluded paradise of white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and peaceful lagoons, offering an authentic Raja Ampat experience far from the crowds.

Waigeo, the largest island in the Raja Ampat archipelago, is a birder’s dream. Its rugged coastline, framed by towering cliffs, gives way to a vast, largely unexplored interior. This dense jungle is home to an incredible array of wildlife, including the iconic Wilson’s Bird-of-Paradise and the Red Bird-of-Paradise. Opossums, snakes, tortoises, and monitor lizards also thrive in this pristine environment.  

Morning Experience: Early Morning Birding Expedition – Waigeo Island 

Depart the ship at 4am for a special birding expedition into the forests of Waigeo, renowned for their remarkable diversity of birdlife. Head torches recommended for early start. Following a Zodiac transfer, guests travel by air-conditioned vehicle to the forest access point before a guided walk leads to carefully selected viewing sites (approximately 40 minutes each way). Due to limited viewing capacity, participation is by pre-registration, with guests divided into small groups targeting either the magnificent Wilson’s Bird-of-Paradise or Red Bird-of-Paradise. As the forest awakens, there is an opportunity to witness spectacular courtship displays and spot other species including Western Crowned Pigeons, Raja Ampat Pitohuis, kingfishers, parrots, hornbills and the elusive Papuan Frogmouth. Local guides will share their knowledge throughout the experience, and light refreshments featuring local snacks will be served in the forest.

After returning to the ship mid-morning, enjoy time to relax as we reposition to Mioskun Island in the heart of Raja Ampat’s renowned Dampier Strait. Surrounded by crystal-clear waters, Mioskun is celebrated for its pristine coral reefs, exceptional marine biodiversity, and some of the region’s most rewarding snorkelling. Upon arrival, guests will go ashore by Zodiac to explore the island’s spectacular fringing reef, where vibrant coral gardens and abundant marine life thrive just offshore. For those seeking a slower pace, the island’s white-sand beach provides a tranquil setting to relax and enjoy the beauty of this idyllic tropical paradise.

Choose to snorkel over vibrant coral gardens and along dramatic reef walls, where colourful reef fish, giant clams, soft corals, and sponges thrive in the crystal-clear waters. This pristine marine environment offers an exceptional opportunity to experience the extraordinary biodiversity for which Raja Ampat is renowned.

During the early morning, we cruise back into Sorong. Farewell your Expedition Team upon disembarkation.  

Join a guided tour of Sorong, beginning with a visit to a hilltop Buddhist temple offering panoramic views of the town and coastline. Continue to the bustling local fish market to experience daily life as fishing boats unload their catch, before exploring a Papuan batik shop and, time permitting, the vibrant Pasar Remu market, where local produce, crafts, and everyday goods provide a glimpse into the region’s culture and traditions. 

Transfer to the airport for your charter flight (meal included) to Denpasar, Bali. The flight is scheduled to depart at 15:20, arriving in Denpasar at 17:40, marking the conclusion of your journey through the remarkable landscapes and cultures of Idyllic Raja Ampat & Cenderawasih Bay.
