30th30 | NovNov | 202121 | Santa Cruz de La Palma, Spain | 08:00 | 18:00
Also known as ‘La Isla Bonita’ (the beautiful island), La Palma is typified by lush forests of pine, laurel and fern which contrast with the rugged splendour of the gigantic Taburiente crater. The island is dotted with attractive villages, which are a delight to discover, and the capital Santa Cruz also makes for an interesting day of exploration. Perched on the edge of the volcanic crater of La Caldereta, Santa Cruz comfortably blends modern architecture with old colonial buildings. Perhaps visit the fascinating Natural History Museum, stroll around the historic quarters and the Plaza de Espana or travel a few miles outside the city to the exquisite Church of Our Lady. If you enjoy shopping, you can find reasonably priced silver jewellery, leather goods and beautifully embroidered clothes, tablecloths and napkins, a speciality of the Canary Islands. Depending on the evolution of the situation regarding the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, the excursions in La Palma or the itinerary of the cruise may be adapted, according to safety regulations. We'll spend the morning on an optional excursion: Volcanoes and Wines. After visiting the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Snows, we'll continue on to the Mirador de la Conception overlook to take in the gorgeous views of Santa Cruz and the eastern coast of the island. Then, we'll visit the Museum El Molino and its ceramic workshop, where potters create replicas of the ceramics and handicrafts once used by the island's indigenous people. Our next stop will be the San Antonio Volcano for a walk around its crater before enjoying a tasting of some wines in a local bodega. Join us for an optional excursion to the island of La Palma this afternoon. We'll visit the Silk Museum at the center of the island to learn about the labor-intensive techniques involved in producing the fabric. Our tour includes the workshop, where we observe the artists crafting their work using traditional know-how. Afterwards, we'll head to a wonderfully restored sugar plantation that contains the largest collection of private art in the islands. We'll take a break and enjoy a cup of tea and a pastry while taking in the ocean view. Optional Excursion, not included in the package, and only through reservations before your trip (limited number of spots available): Stargazing. La Palma is known for having one of the most beautiful nighttime skies. At nightfall, we'll leave by coach for the Pilar Observation Point at 3,280 feet in altitude (1,000 m), where a specialist will reveal all of the celestial secrets above us. Our ship will cruise to La Gomera overnight.

With a wealth of natural beauty and all the exciting attractions of city life in the capital, the island offers the best of both worlds. You will no doubt wish to see the sights of the capital’s old quarter, which dates back to the 15th century and encompassses the Vegueta and Triana districts, and wherever you go you can enjoy the glorious subtropical climate, perfect for growing exotic palms and fruits. Join us for an optional, full-day excursion to discover Gran Canaria (lunch included). We'll begin in Vegueta and the Casa de Colon, a colonial-style mansion with exhibits about the history of the Canary Islands and their link with the New World.
