At first glance, it's hard to imagine that this resort destination was one of the world's great naval powers, and a sturdy rival of Genoa and Pisa for control of the Mediterranean in the 11th and 12th centuries. Once the seat of the Amalfi Maritime Republic, the town is set in a verdant valley of the Lattari Mountains, with cream-colored and pastel-hued buildings tightly packing a gorge on the Bay of Salerno. The harbor, which once launched the greatest fleet in Italy, now bobs with ferries and blue-and-white fishing boats. The main street, lined with shops and pasticcerie, has replaced a raging mountain torrent, and terraced hills flaunt the green and gold of lemon groves. Bearing testimony to its great trade with Tunis, Tripoli, and Algiers, Amalfi remains honeycombed with Arab-Sicilian cloisters and covered passages. The picturesque Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed stretch of coastline, has been a much-loved holiday destination since ancient times. Located in Southern Italy’s Campania region, 20km from Sorrento, it boasts many seaside towns with Italian villas, boutiques and beach clubs hugging the cliffs that rise from the glittering ocean.

Be sure to visit the staircase of the King of Aragon (Escalier du Roi d'Aragon), a steep flight of steps carved into the cliffside, which leads down to the blue-green sea.

Hike Pertusato 
Embark on a scenic journey starting at the port of Bonifacio. Walk along the marina and up the Montée Rostello to reach St Roch Chapel, offering stunning views over the port. Your tour continues eastward, leading you to the cliffs of Bonifacio. Traverse the protected nature site, following the rugged limestone cliffs southeastward toward Capo Pertusato.
Along the way, you'll pass by the Semaphore, a naval observation tower that oversees the bustling shipping traffic of the Straits. Enjoy breathtaking views of Sardinia, the Lavezzi and Cavallo islands, and the picturesque citadel of Bonifacio perched atop the cliffs.
After taking in the sights, return along the same route. Please note that guests should wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing, including sturdy shoes, a weatherproof jacket, a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water. This approximately 3-hour hike involves a change in altitude of about 300 meters and is considered fairly easy, but caution should be exercised near cliff edges.
